how do i lock the drive shaft on a stihl fs66 string trimmer to change heads? are they usually standard threads or left hand to spin off the head? also how do you know the maximum diameter of cutting line that a string trimmer can handle?

On a ryobi bump head there is a hole in the sheet metal housing opposite the shaft near the spool. Put unit on side with hole up. A round rod is inserted thru the hole vertically while turning the head by hand. You feel an "index" hole and push the rod into it. This locks the head which allows the LEFT HAND threaded 11/16" nut to be loosened. I don't know if this is relevant to the Stihl. You should be able to ref line size by manual call out. Or try some diff diameters.

Edit: I should clarify. The above describes taking off the bottom half of a bump head . The top half will also come off, but not normally required on my old ryobi. So if you do not have a 2 part bump head this procedure won't help. I believe others will help you.

Stihl's are basicaly the same. They have a 1/4" hole in the top of the head where you insert an allen wrench or scwrewdriver to hold it and you grab the head with a large plumbers pliers and remove. It has reverse direction threads.

Your question was inferring that you want information on changing the "head". Are you changing the head? or the line
