This favors a belt guide that is too far from the side of a pulley or has broken off.
I have seen many that were bent back to "cheat" a new belt on instead of loosening or removing the guides.
Using a shorter belt is not the answer, using the correct belt is important. Some aftermarket belts are not made to correct specifications even though they claim they "fit".
