any of y'all know a good source for the CAT branded portable gens? RP5500
I found the IPL on CATs website, but not really many good places to purchase items.
From what i gather the engine is a RATO 300V

Hi Scrubcadet10,

This is a private label build with the CAT paint and labels on it. RATO engines mostly show to be European built, but like a contact Chinese clone engine like many others.

Give the following model a look at.
DR Power R300
At least the recoil appears to be the same and not a "D" shaped one.

Also if you need the R300V maintenance manual I do have a copy that I could PM a link to.

Just note there a few versions of the R300. I know there is at a "S" series too.

Looks like getting engine related stuff shouldn't be too hard, now i need a short cable for the choke, this looks like the fun search
CAT 511-8036 and
CAT 511-8853 which is a fuel fitting, it looks like a honda type fitting, i need to pull it out and can probably match it up.

If it matches provide the Honda PN so I can add it to my database.

Well 48 hours with no Replies from RATO to the email or parts request I sent them yet......

May have to convert it to a lever style choke like the storm responders.

Sounds about right due to the head nut and his pissing off other countries with his tariffs.

But I the choke is something that Cat did before they quit selling low end generators if what I found is correct.

Im driving about 30 minutes up to Huntsville tomorrow to pick up some good parts, I'm getting the whole control panel with the choke cable .. and anything else I can get . Good ol Facebook marketplace.

I assume that means you have the choke resolved.

On the fuel fitting this is what I have now crossed.

yessir got a choke cable as well, just waiting for a recoil assembly to be delivered, then i can actually diagnose this unit

Well i finally got this basket case assembled so I can diagnose it.
Shes surging bad, but it's weird, pulling the choke has very little affect on the surge, it will surge up until get to almost full choke, then it will start blowing black smoke and running rich. There's no sweet spot to stop the surge, so that makes me think , maybe a governor or load issue, for the heck of it I disconnected the wires coming from the generator head and restarted it, issue persisted.
I also removed the governor link and did the throttle by hand, any less than 1/2 throttle and no choke, she dies...
This problem has occured in the carburetor the customer installed, one I installed with new gaskets.
I'm thinking of opening the carb up again and enlarging the jets to see if that gives any improvement, but on the other hand, I don't think it will since the choke never gets rid of the surge, it goes from surging to chugging rich with no in between.
Spark Plug looks like a lean burn.

It might be a spark plug or coil problem. I had a Briggs 31 that about drove me crazy until it dawn the only thing I hadn't changed was the spark plug.

I put a new NGK in it, since it had a Torch.
I'll put spark tester on it and see what the sparks doing.

Hi Scrubcadet10,

Check out James Condon and his generator repair videos online. He tackles some pretty interesting carburetor surge problems.

Here's a video of this little pot.

Went back through the carburetor, and checked spark, good bright blue consistent spark.
One thing I've noticed, quite a bit of fuel spray back out of the intake when it bogs..

Hi Scrub Cadet,

From watching your video, this is a bleed air jet problem.

Have the valves been checked for proper adjustment and to make sure a spring has not broken? Anything is possible when dealing with a basket case project.

Aftermarket carburetors are some of the worst to deal with for this problem. I like to think just because they will bolt on and fit, does not mean they will work correctly.

James Condon and Teryl Fixes All have some videos that talk about this subject, but I have not found one in particular that I could attach yet. (I will keep looking)

You will need some very fine wire drills to resize the bleed air jet that is pressed into the housing below the base idle set screw.

There is also a rare chance that the flywheel has been tampered with by the prior owner and the flywheel nut was not retightened properly. It takes only a degree or two of key shear to disturb the exact timing on these small engines.

I began suspecting a valve issue, I pulled the cover off last night, both valves have .005" of clearance, and travel the same distance closer to open.

Hi Scrubcadet 10,

That is the one I'm referring to. Also be aware that the tiny O-rings need a little bit of light lube, so they slip into place without getting nicked.

Here is a sample video from Teryl Fixes all. Go to the 2:30 minute mark.

Here is another from James Condon:

Well I worked with my micro drill bit some this evening. Going up one size at a time, I went up three sizes without any change whatsoever. I stopped there.
Here is another video of one issue it has, sometimes the governor will hang wide open, this is when it will chug black smoke and smell rich. The governor will not return to surging until I manually move the governor link or I open the choke slowly then it continues surging. I verified that it is not physically hanging on anything outside of the engine when it does this.

I will probably do what star tech mentioned and check the flywheel key.
