I know this question has come up many times---but carburetor "kits" today tend to be generic and come without instructions. The carb. on my ancient 12 HP (220707-0650-01) always leaked so with end of season I undertook an overhaul. The kit included lots of parts which wouldn't fit the carburetor I had so I used those which did, including a Viton-tipped float valve needle . There was no elastomeric seat in the kit.

Carburetor is now much much worse than it was. Float level was correct after rebuild and I have lowered the float several times since but the carburetor doesn't leak with fuel attached and engine not running. But as soon as the engine starts the carb. floods. If I test the carb. by inverting it the valve seems to seal, and if I then return it to normal position the float drops and the valve opens as it should.

I've now ordered the correct B&S kit for the float valve--but I'm worried about the elastomeric seat. Which way is it inserted---does the hollow cup-shape face into the counterbore or does it face towards the float chamber? In other words, does the tip of the needle seal against the "lips" of the center tube or does it seal against the rounded hole in the face of the other side of the seal? The kit includes a solid metal needle and also one with Viton tip. Which is used with the elastomeric seat?

the viton needle goes with the metal seat. The rubber seat, which should have a dished area around the hole, faces the metal needle valve.
