I'm cleaning up an old snapper for a neighbor and didn't really want to rebuild the carb, just help her get it running. This spring she couldn't get it to start so I replaced battery, spark plug, fuel lines and fuel and air filters, dumped the fuel in the tank, dumped the gas in the carb bowl. It will start for me and run a little but dies. Choke doesn't appear to be functioning, always open. Maybe my idle screw and fuel mixture screws are are not pre set correctly.:confused2::confused2:

Initial settings for your carb are; 1&1/2 turns out from lightly seat for the high speed needle valve. That is the one coming in from the bottom. 1&1/4 turns out from lightly seated for the idle needle valve. That is the on the top. I would first remove the nozzle going down from the top and make sure it is clean. After you have it running, at full throttle, adjust the high speed needle in until the engine starts to bog and then out 1/4 turn. Then go to idle speed and adjust the idle needle in until it starts to bog and then out 1/8 turn.

Hello, thanks for your help. I got the engine to run but it lopes at full throttle and won't purr. Carb rebuild maybe or governor problem perhaps. I need a service manual for it. Where is the best place to download them?

Good luck. I've heard there are some sites out there, but haven't located a reliable site.

Did you do the the settings when you had the engine running (hot)(as above) and am sure you will be able to take apart a carb and refit it without a manual.

I'm a bit afraid to dive into a tune job without a manual on a mower that hasn't had the best of maintenance schedules, but you are right. A single barrel carb is pretty simple. It starts fine and I wait until it normalizes but if I wait too long, the muffler is awfully close to the high speed needle on the bottom and it gets mighty hot.
I have a 14 hp Cub Cadet, 1970 model with a new Kohler engine and the manual recommends fine tuning it under load with blades turning. I'm not new at keeping lawn mowers going and I suspect a carb kit is what I need. Thanks for everyone's comments. Jeff

Does anyone know if there are carb kits out there, and where?
