I have a troy built tiller with BS engine 135292-1158-e1. It hasn't been used that much but doesn't run well at all. Hard to start, then runs only with chock partially on and only at high speed. Will not idle. Seems as though it is starving for fuel. Worked well in the past.
I took the pulsa jet carburetor apart after reading another post about a 4hp engine with similar carburetor. Has a great website posted by "BRIGS" member that walks you through the carburetor. I replaced the pump diaphragm and the gasket between the engine and the tank. Cleaned the carburetor the best that can without pulling out all the welch plugs and ball plugs. This carburetor is very difficult to work on at best. It seems most of the passages are internal or out of the site and reach of being able to put air pressure or small wires to clean them. Almost everything is inaccessible.
I pulled out the jet on the side of the carburetor; it is slightly different from the website in the fact that it is a fixed jet that screws into the body and not a needle that is adjustable. At least I don't see how it could be adjustable. It's a hollow tube with two small holes in the sides connected to a threaded stem. (someone might be able to explain more )
There has got to be a way of getting this carburetor, cleaned better.
I will have access to an ultrasonic cleaner in about a week, but I haven't had much better result from them than I do by cleaning with air pressure, very small wires, and very selective placement of carburetor cleaner. Maybe I'm using the wrong cleaning fluid. What type should or could be used?
Any help or past experience on getting this clean and workable again would greatly be appreciated.
Rex

When you had it apart before, what was the tank condition? Rusty? Did it have the foam in the tank?

We have switched to Simple Green, which has given us much better results than the powder. Also, you will get better results if you make sure the solution is hot. No need to remove welch or ball plugs. Normal run a cycle of Six to ten minutes.

The tank does not have a foam sponge inside of it. it is just a metal container with a small metal tub at the top for the mess covered jet to sit in.( a tube like mesh that slips over the jet body for about 1.5 inches up the body and the bottom end folded over itself to seal the bottom). It had a very small indication of rust but nothing like a bad one would have. The small tub at the top was silver colored and almost perfectly clean. The jet that sits in it was not plugged and clearly open. The long dip tube that goes to the pump part of the carburetor also had a mesh screen on the bottom of it and it was good. I did blow air through it and got it out of the open pump ok.
thanks

Thanks for the info Rivets. I'll give it try. Do you know the power of your ultrasonic cleaner. The one I'm about to use is 70 watts. That seems a little small, but maybe not. It also has a heater setting . 4820 model.

The powder we used to use was from Harbor Frieght. It work ok, but not as good as Simple Green. Sorry I don't know the size of our unit, I don't pay much attention to that type of thing. It looked small, but does a good job.

Is your cleaner from Harbor Freight? Chicago Electric?
If so, I believe it is equivalent to the Stabilo cd-4820 model and the Codyson cd-4820 model that look practically identical.
As I was looking through the power of different cleaners yesterday, I downloaded the Harbor freight manual and found on the instructions a picture of the display face with the Number 4820 instead of the exact picture of theirs that says Chicago Electric. Then by searching that number, I found the two items listed above with the same picture on their instructions. I think it is the same only re-branded to Chicago electric. Either way, they have a 60 watt transducer with a 100 watt heater. Not bad compared to others I found of this size. I did read replies that state water gets by the plastic to metal intersections at the top and eventually corrodes the electronics down under. They have cured this by adding some silicone to seal the connection gap around where the lid sits.
If you have had good luck with this unit, I'm considering purchasing one for myself.
Thanks for the info.

I'll try to remember to check which brand we have today when I go into work. Yes, we have had good results with the unit we have, and I would recommend it.
