I have a Tecumseh HH100 on a John Deere 110 flat fender built in 1971. It runs fine at full throttle but surges at 1/2 throttle or less. It stalls out at the lowest throttle settings. I just purchased it and noticed a gas smell in my garage after the first night it was in there. I found that gas is dripping slowly off the two screws on the bottom of the carburetor. I then took it for a run and in putting it away I turned the cut-off switch in the fuel line and let it run out of fuel. I figured this would stop the leak temporarily while in the garage. I have never worked on a small engine before but have been reading about the carb problems. From what I understand the carb gasket could be one of several culprits. I did try adjusting the centered (brass) screw but put it back to where it was when the motor wouldn't stay running. I am wondering what the non-centered screw is for? Didn't mess with that one. Any suggestions or educated comments would be appreciated. The man I bought the tractor from stated the HH100 was the original motor, however, I can find no record of JD having put a Tecumseh in a 110 and I doubt very much that there would not be at least a rebuild in its history since 1971.
