I have a 2006 scag mower, the problem is I cant get it to start. I know I got compression and I got fire to the plugs but I cant get it to hit even using starting fluid, it wont try and start at all. so I'm kind of thinking that the timing might be off, I just don't know where to start to determine that, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What type engine do you have on the mower? Mower engines are typically timed with a flywheel key that fits a keyway that mates the flywheel and the top of the crankshaft together. To access your flywheel key you will need to remove the engine shroud and remove the flywheel nut to access the key. It should fit solidly in place without any gaps. If it is splintered or if the keyways on the crankshaft and the flywheel are not aligned, you probably have a sheared key. Engines are also times by dots on the cam and the crankshaft but if no one has ever been inside the engine you should not have to worry about that. Another possibility is that your valves are out of adjustment requiring you to remove the valve cover and check for proper gapping. Make sure all your safety interlock switches are working as well (probably oughtta start with that since they're the easiest to check) Hopefully this will start you in the right direction. Good luck.
