camshaft trouble

I need instructions on installing a camshaft in a 14 hp opposed twin 400707-1221-01 there is something I am doing wrong tell me if I am wrong I am trying to get camshaft fitted between the tappets and set in the hole but when I line the mark on cam and crank together it seems the lobes hits the tappets as I try to fit it in it should line up with with hole that camshaft sets in what am I doing wrong

It will be a pain to fit the cam with the valves installed, but you are doing it correctly. the two cylinders fire 180 degrees from each other so when the cam is installed it will actually have the valves open on one cylinder

You need to rotate the crank and gears to get it to sit in there, and then just rotate the crank to ensure that the marks line up. You will likely have to do a little rotating when fitting the bottom sump on as well, don't force anything.
