Briggs starter not enough power

Twin cylinder 18hp Briggs lawn mower engine will not turn over past the compression stroke. It will crank on one cylinder. Will a new starter fix it? Starter rebuild people said it was a good starter.

If this is a v-twin OHV then check the valve clearances to make sure they are within spec .004-.006

I replaced a battery for my 20HP B&S and it was just the valve's needing adjusted. It doesn't take them being off too much to cause this issue.

There are no rocker arm adjusters on this model. How do you adjust the valves?

Have you made sure that your battery is good? Will it turn over if you jump directly to the starter?

There was nothing wrong with the valve adjustment or the battery. Our local starter rebuild store had avaliable a heavy duty starter. We put it on and it cranks the motor easily. I believe these mowers were engineered with starters that are too weak. Thanks for the suggestions.

If you have a larger wire (4 or 6 Gage ) for the positive cable try that. Some of the tractor manufacturers used wire that was too small ( creating to much resistance ) which we have solved by installing larger wires.

I hooked jumper cables directly to the starter with good car battery. It still did not turn over.

tells me that your starter is bad. you said it cranked with bigger starter. get one and see if that fixes things.
