Briggs head gasket replacement

Hello All,

I have a Briggs 20 HP Model 31P977 Type 0635 engine that I believe has a blown head gasket after 7 years. Oil dripping out of the muffler, runs really rough, spark plug fouled with oil. The B&S website has a lot of negative reviews on this engine for head gasket issues.

I have a parts manual from their website, aside from the head gasket, what other gaskets are needed and can someone provide a repair manual just for the head gasket?

Exhaust gasket will normally tear when the muffler pipe is removed. some of the engine may need a intake gasket, but if you have the plastic intake manifold, then most likely you will have the square cut O ring, which is most cases can be reused. May need a OHV cover gasket, if your engine doesn't use the RTV type sealant.
