Briggs carb removal problem

I am trying to replace a carburetor on my Briggs and Stratton 12 1/2 HP ride on. I cannot get the carb mount studs loose. they are recessed. the deep sockets I have used are too thick to fit into the recessed area. I have tried to use a box wrench to grab the little bit of the bolt protruding but its not working and I dont want to strip the head. I tried a 5/16 nut driver with no success. I have seen videos that say use a 5/16 others an 8 mm in either case I'm stuck. Do they sell the correct wrench for this? Any suggestions on how to get these out?

When you don't have the tool, make one. Grind the deep socket wall down till it fits. Easy right?

Also model and type numbers of the engine.

Some studs also have a E5 end that requires a E5 socket. Looks like a torx bit.

Also the 5/16 deep well socket should a 1/4 drive type non impact version.

get vice grips on the unthreaded portion of the stud, if not a regular chrome (not impact rated, black) 1/4" drive socket should fit down in there

Ahhh, I see the problem it your socket needs the tip ground down a little. It is a problem that many sockets have a bevel on the leading inside edge which will not grip shallow head screws. This is why I have several small diameter sockets with the tips ground down.

Something I had forgot about as it is automatic thing for me to do from my years of working on office equipment.

BTW the 5/16 and 8mm socket are virtually the same size sockets as is 7/16-11mm, 1/2 -13mm, 5/8-16mm, 7/8-22mm, and 15/16-24mm as long you are using the six point versions. It when you go to the 12 point versions you will see the difference.

Might want to CLEAN the entire block before removing that carb. All that grit can and will fall into the engine. At least take an old paint brush and knock some of that dirt mummy wrap down. Cooling fins I would bet need some love.

Can you get two nuts that fit on those threads? If so, you can tighten the nuts against each other and then use an open end wrench on the inner nut to take out the stud.

Pliers will take them off. 1/4" drive deep socket will too. Ain't the space program fellas'.
