Moved into a new home and found a MTD Lawn Machine in the shed. The carb is a Briggs and Stratton LMT
4993 with solenoid. There are rusty and frozen parts on the carb so I've decided to replace it. I can find a lot of 5-4993 replacements carbs on the market but can't find one with the solenoid.
If anyone knows where to find a 4993 besides eBay, amazon, Jack's and all the other sites from the google search 1st page.
Or, can I add a working solenoid the a 5-4993 and have the solenoid work?
Or, can I run the 5-4993 even though it does not have the solenoid?

Appreciate any help. Thank you, Alex

I've seen carbs WORSE than that resurrected from the dead, and be rebuilt to run like new... why not take it apart to see what you have to work with...?? got nothing to lose if you're intent on a new carb already ... check out this link and jump into it, MAYBE get a kit and save yourself some money, on the other hand I have had good luck with 2 different Ebay Chinese carbs 1 @ about $15.00 the other ( similar to yours) @ around $25.00

SORRY forgot this link .....

Boobala, thanks for your advice. I am going to do as you suggest and try to rebuild it. The website looks great and I'm getting started right now. Again, thanks!

The solenoid is for anti-backfiring upon shutting off so the new carb is ok if it doesn't have it. Left it idle at a last idle for 30-60 seconds before shutting off.

REMEMBER !! take LOTS of pics BEFORE starting work, and during, a man's mind tends to get get easily distracted, specially if there are 2 legged "lumpy-critters" in or about the work area !! ..

By the way, the old solenoid will work on the new carb.

The new Chinese carb I bought for $25.00 came with a solenoid on it, works like the OEM .. an OEM solenoid costs as much/more than 2 of the Chinese carbs !

This is the carb I'm currently using on my 17.5 HP Briggs on my 42" Murray .. Works GREAT !! ..

thanks for continuing help. I could not extract the inlet seat no matter what I did. I tried to extract it and no, it wouldn't budge. I tried penetrating oil and soaked it in carb cleaner. But that seat would not budge. So now I've gone ahead and bought a true 4993 on ebay. Its used and cheap so as soon as I get it, I'll try it out. I also need to replace the carb gaskets and mower drive belt. Can you suggest any sites? thanks
