Briggs and Stratton fuel troubles

I have a Briggs & Stratton 24 HP engine (445677-0827-E1) on a Craftsman 46 inch riding mower (917-288280). It cranks well and gets fire. It starts briefly with starting fluid but won稚 run for more than about 1 second. It has new fuel and I致e confirmed the fuel pump is pumping fuel into the carb inlet. I removed the carb and cleaned it thoroughly and confirmed the governor is adjusted properly. I put it back together and it started right up. I drove it for about a minute and parked it last night. This morning it cranks but won稚 start again (except briefly with starting fluid). I let it cool and then confirmed I could hear that the fuel solenoid was clicking when the key is turned on and again when turned off. I then touched the solenoid and found it very hot to the touch. I confirmed the solenoid is retracting when the key is on and extending when the key is off. Any assistance is appreciated.
