Repairs Briggs and Stratton fuel tank thread sheared! Repair?

Hi all I am new.

I have a Sovereign SV405 lawn mower with a Briggs and Stratton 450 148cc engine.

The problem I am having is the bit of the engine (don't know what you would call it!) where the fuel tank screws onto has snapped in half or sheared off. I have tried using a nut and some cable ties but nothing I try will connect the petrol tank to the engine and it wobbles and rattles about. This has already snapped the intake manifold.

Is there anyway to repair this? I am not sure if it's safe to weld a nut onto it or something.

Any ideas?

Normally, a mower with these problems has a bent crankshaft or bent blade, so you should check that next.

Hmm I can't see why that would be related to it. I am not sure how the thing broke, may have been when I was putting it away.
The blade is pretty kinked from hitting a bit of submerged path right enough.

like fish said check crankshaft first
-tip mower on its side carb up
- unplug spark plug
-pull rope watch center of blade it should not wobble if it wobbles you have a bent shaft and need to thinking about replacing engine or mower.

As for the fuel tank that can be tricky can try to rethread or try to replace the part it screws into or make your own I find some metal pieces of hardware from home depot two 90degree engorged bolt to deck and another straight piece of metal coming out of those same department and a piece of tin you can easily make a secondary bracket.

OK I will check that but I still do not see how that relates to the fuel tank being loose because the bit that it bolts onto is damaged. Maybe it has something to do with my question? When I said it wobbles and rattles around I was talking about the fuel tank because it's only attached at the front.

Thanks for the advice, I'll see if I can make some sort of bracket. Never thought along those lines.

It comes from working on the stuff. If someone brings in a mower with parts falling off and broken bolts, it is usually because of severe vibration, so there is little use trying to fix the broken stuff, until you find out if you can fix the vibration.
