I have a 16 hp Briggs and Stratton apposed twin. I am looking to buy a used crankcase /block. My question is, are the 17 hp or the 18 hp crankcase compatable with the 16 hp? As that is all I can find availed on line.

you could compare part numbers if you have the model number of the engines.

Well actually you need to compare model numbers since it is possible to find one model number covering all the hp ratings you mention. Hp rating does not mean much. But yes, the difference between 40 series L head and 42 series is the stroke thus different crankshaft and connecting rods. Difference in part number in this case does not mean the blocks will not interchange.
