tried jumping my craftsman mower with a 19.5 hp engine and fried the solenoid. replaced the solenoid and now when i try to start it, it will turn maybe half a turn, making a god awful noise and then stop. then if i turn the flywheel back to where it is free, turn the key and get the same result. any suggestions????:confused2:

Your valve clearance is likely out of adjustment. There are several threads to adjust them on this site. It is an easy fix but I found mine needed tighter intake clearances than where called for.

I suggest you check the bendix drive on the starter. Could have the teeth broken off.

Rivets, if that was the problem, what would the solution be? Buy an entire new starter or can you replace the bendix itself?

You can just replace the bendix, much cheap than a new starter, even if you need a mechanic do it.
