Engine starts but missis and backfires and after a minute or two it starts to run fine, replaced the coil was not getting spark, rebuilt carburetor.

Sounds like the Choke is not working.

Check the linkage and tiny springs if this model has an auto choke. Otherwise, the choke cable may simply need adjusting. Remove the air filter and see what's going on. You should be able to see the choke with the air filter removed.

ya i have everything off and see the choke it is open when it is doing this.

  • Replace the spark plug with a new one.
  • Start using a fuel conditioner and carb cleaner, such as StarTron , on the outside chance that a dirty fuel system is causing this issue.

So when its trying to get going after it starts the carburetor is just spiting and spraying gas out the carb

Put up a video of it on your cell phone. TURN THE PHONE sideways while shooting. Need to see direction of fuel travel.

Good luck on you fix. The good news is that B&S 46 series engine was originally called a 20 hp. Later it went to 22 hp. Yours with a 16.5 hp sticker probably means it is among the last ones made.

B&S discontinued flahead, "L" Head, engines due to government regulations. They used up the last of their inventory by slapping whatever hp sticker on them the purchasing manufacture requested. Not illegal to under label hp rating, just over labeling them.

well toke the heads off does anyone know the timing on this engine are the intake and exhaust valves open the same time on both cylinders are both intake same time then exhaust same time on each head. P.S. i am trying to send a video but not able to.
