I have an older Briggs model # 196702-0142-01 and currently have a leaking sump oil seal as I replaced with a new sump and seal about a year ago. The Briggs engine is on a troy-bilt 33" wide cut mower that I purchased in 1996. I think the crankshaft Part # 495629 is worn down so much that it will continue to leak even with a new seal. I can not find a new or used crank to replace this one. Also looking for a good used crank as I have looked on Ebay, facebook and everywhere else. Anyone got any ideas.

If push comes to shove. You can install a Redi Sleeve that has a removable flange if necessary. But make the PTO side bushing is not worn out first as that will leakage. This provided the journal hasn't worn down past the minimum spec of the sleeve.

Looks like a SKF 99114 fit the bill; although, it will take making an installation tool as the tool that come with it will not work. Your crankshaft PTO end spec is 1.181"


Sleeve thickness is .0098 so that will add .0196 to the overall diameter.

b1 is the seal seat width as you got to remove the removable flange.

Now here something I thought in the middle of the night, That is will the crankshaft thru the bearing sleeve in the closure place once this sleeve is installed. Probably will take a machine shop to resize the OD after after the sleeve is installed.

If you can provide the model and type number along with date code I might have the crankshaft drawing. If I do then I post both drawing for to compare.

Hello CGM,

Unless the crank has a very serious groove in it where the seal rides, I would replace the seal with only a new B&S seal. Do not use an aftermarket seal or anything that claims it is the same. You have to read parts ads carefully lately because they use language like: "same as part XYZ" and so forth.

I recommend Jack's small engine or Parts Tree to get a genuine crank seal.

Make sure the crank is lubed up lightly along with the lip of the seal, then pack grease on the inside back and carefully push it into place making sure the sealing lip does not fold outward. Most cranks have a smooth machined bevel, so sand it clean if it has rust from exposure.

Hint: a wood skewer or a toothpick will gently guide and walk the seal lip into place but work slowly. Do not hammer on the seal because the garter spring will likely come out of the back of the seal. Most can be pushed in by steady hand pressure.
