Briggs 21hp Push Rod Issue - Fixed but I don't know what caused the problem

Good Morning,

I'm new to the forum and I am not a mechanic, so please excuse my description of things.
I have a 10 year old JD LA120 with the Briggs 441677-0113-E1 engine.
I ran out of gas a few day ago, filled it back up and killed the battery trying to get fuel into it. Finally got the gas to the carb but it would not start.
After 2 days of checking everything I can think of I took off one of the valve covers and the top push rod (exhaust?) was just lying there. It wasn't bent, so I pushed down on the spring and put it back in place.
Removed the other side and the exact same thing - the push rod was just lying there. Put it back in as I did on the other side. I checked the gap, with what I had available (don't have a set of feeler gauges), and I would guess it was .006".
I'll get a set today and verify.
Put it all back together and it fired right up, went and mowed for about an hour with no issues.

My question/ curiosity is, what caused both rods to come out?

Appreciate any feedback

Thanks and have a great day,
Joe

Rockers too loose or valve guides out of place.......

Let us know how much the valves were out.........
