Have a wee bit of a problem with my yard tractor. I have a 18.5HP B&S # 31P777-0296-E1 engine that has gone kaput.
I am thinking (About 99%) sure I have broken the connecting rod. Was doing my usual weekend mow, when a loud metallic clank, and engine stop occured. Look underneath to see if I hit anything, etc. Checked oil, engine case, etc. Nothing.
Tried to refire, motor turned then "Clank". Moved the top screen manually with hands forward and back, clank in each direction...... Then I could fully turn it. Tried start.... engine spins very freely, making me think no compression..... wallah! Connecting rod.
Anyway, does anyone know where I can find a proper service manual (With all the cool breakdown instructions step by step) for this particular engine?
You might be money ahead to find a used engine and stick it in the hole. It's not unusual to end up with a block beyond repair when the con rod lets loose at 3200 RPM. You'll know more soon, I'm sure..

I found a website that has the parts diagram. You can find the conn rod and see the exploded view.
