I have had this mower for 6 years but it has only run 2 seasons. Its is a 7HP B&S Intek OHV engine. I cannot get this mower to keep running. It will start about every 50 attempts to starts by yanking on the pull rope. I have become a small engine medic and done the basics. Cleaned the carb several times including cleaning the bowl bolt jets. Have another new spark plug, fresh oil, and made sure the OHV have been gapped properly. I have worked on it on and off for the last couple of years because I did not want to learn about small gas engines. Well now I have researched and You Tube my family to death with this thing. I finally put on a new magneto after thinking that maybe it was just a defective one. It started on about the 5th time my son yanked on the pull cord, so I let it run by clamping the safety bar down. Mower ran for about 5 minutes while I was putting everything together after magneto replacement. The RPM's would dip every 10-20 seconds breifly but the mower ran until I started putting the air filter back on and then it died. The mower has run with the filter on, so the filter is not the issue. When I pull the starter cord the mower will sputter like it wants to run but not start and will not keep running.

I have tried pushing the primer bulb while my son keeps trying to pull start the engine, satarter fluid, gas is fresh and tank was emptied after last years attempt to get it running. Air filter is good. Just this spring I have put a brand new spark pug in, checked fuel line for obstructions, checked fuel tank as best could. changed the oil again, gapped the valves, and now replaced the magneto. It has run for about 5-10 minutes twice before the magneto replacmen. I took a wire brush to the magneto to knock off somesurface rust. What gives?

The only thing I can suggest you try is to either get a a high altitude jet or punch the main jet larger. If you would like to punch the main jet you will need a set of acetylene torch tip cleaners. If it does not work you will have to purchase a new jet.

i don't know all of the info you have done so far but my suggestion would be to clean gas tank thoroughly, make sure fuel lines are good, clean carburetor again, make sure there are no air leaks (gaskets etc). make sure you have good spark, oil is proper level and clean (no gas in it). check your float if it is tin/brass for holes, check compression. again if it has good fuel, spark and compression it shoud start and stay running. I am not certified in any small engine repair.
