Hi All

I have a Bernard Loisirs BL14536RBH sit on lawnmower with Briggs and Stratton engine. The engine is fine but when out on a job last week the brake/clutch pedal has stuck and will not move. I like to do my own small engine repair but this problem has got me stumped. I will list the info on the problem below in the hope that someone can help me out with this:

The wheels are not locked and can still roll.
All the brake and clutch mechanism works perfectly when the wheels are off the ground but as soon as the wheels are on the floor it locks up again in the same off position.
The engine was running fine before it broke but cannot start the engine now as i need to drop the clutch to start it.
All the parts of the clutch/brake mechanism are oiled and free from mud etc.

Another problem is that the mower is stuck in a field where a tractor cannot get to it and is to far away from track to tow it out with car so it needs to be fixed where it is.

Any help anyone can give will be welcomed

I read your post and you say you can't move the tractor from the field. The service manual that I find under that name and model says it has a hydro transaxle, is that correct? If it is, there will be a lever or knob that you will have to (push/pull/turn) one of those actions to move the tractor. It sounds like you are having trouble with your transaxle. Reply back if it is a hydro.

Thanks for your reply gfp55, yes it is a hydro transaxle! The transaxle doesnt seem to be locking the wheels as the mower will move forward and back ok but i cannot get it out of field because it is on a hill and i cant physically push it uphill even with help and i cant get a car or big tractor anywhere near it to tow it up. I removed the cutting deck but is still too difficult to move.
The only thing i thought it could be by looking at it was the transaxle. I turned the rear wheels when mower was jacked up off the ground and the wheels turned in opposite directions....just letting you know in case that helps at all.

If the wheels turn in opposite directions when the rear end is off the ground and the transaxle is in neutral, then I would have to say you transaxle is broken. I don't know what to say about your problem. I wish there was more I could do for you. Sorry. Keep me posted please. Can you get more people to help push your tractor?

It's a difficult one for sure. I am sure i will manage to get it out and i don't really need to use it for a short while so i am not losing work with it being off the road at the moment it is just a bit of a pain. I am looking into buying another mower as well this week as at least with two mowers i can work on one when it breaks and use the other for work.

I have read that it is possible to repair hydro transaxles or do you think this would be difficult to do? The price of a new one is probably more than i am willing to pay at the mo so probably have nothing to lose by at least opening it up and seeing if i can find what is broken. I got the model number of the transaxle and there are repair manuals for it so will have a look soon and see what the situation is.
