In have a John Deere 737 with a 23 hp Kawasaki engine. Twice the oil filter has worked loose, dumping 1 quart of oil. I was using STP filters. I have now switched back to JD filters. The engine is smoking badly, not from the exhaust but from the cooling fins. Any ideas? Oil sucked up by the fan, or somung worse? If it is oil sucked up by the fan, how can I fix this?

When the filter came loose who knows where all that oil sprayed and got blown around. May try removing the engine cover and taking a peek to see if there is oil everywhere. There was issues with another companies oil filters a few years ago, that they had oiled the gasket to make fitting to the filter easier at the factory assembly line. the problem was the oil would settle under the gasket and when installed people would think they were tight and then when the engine was warmed up the oil would seep out and then the filter was loose causing an oil leak. Several engines where destroyed because of it.

I would also check to see if you now have 2 oil filter gaskets under the filter. It can happen and I have seen it more than once.

OK, I'll admit to having this happen to me, doing an oil change on the wifes car (in a hurry) & the old rubber stayed on the engine, I never noticed till she started it up. Oil everywhere. That was over 20 yrs ago, but she still will remind me of it as she feels needed.

This is why i posted this. It only takes one time for this to happen for you to make sure that the oil filter gasket is still connected to the old oil filter every single time you take one off.
