Blade won't engage

I just bought a used Toro LX425. When I push the lever forward to engage the blade it either won't start or takes longer than 30 seconds. If I pull the deck lever towards me but do not move the level, the blades will start for a few seconds then stop again after I release it back into the notch. What would be the reason for this? I appreciate any assistance .

It sounds like there is not enough tension on the belt to engage the blades. Make sure the idler pulley is moving freely and not getting bound up. Spin each pulley and ensure that they all move freely as well. Have someone engage the lever while you look to make sure everything is engaging as it should. (BTW, do this without the engine running ) When the lever moves forward, a cable pulls a spring which moves an idler pulley that puts tension on the deck belt so the blades will engage. Make sure all that is happening. If something is out of order make sure nothing is bent. Good luck and let us know what you find.
