blade clutch won't disengage on Honda HRB 215 after reinsalling

Trying to teach my son some minor mechanical duties, I had him use an impact to remove the blades on my Honda HRB 215 mower, and he removed the whole blade clutch assembly instead. Without seeing how it came apart, I re-installed it as how it seemed it would go together. Now the blades are always spinning, even while starting it. Could it be just a simple cable adjustment? or, could I have put it back together wrong? It worked great and all adjustments were good before removal? Any help would be much appreciated.

Post complete model & serial numbers from mower deck as there are many HRB215's, thanks.

Thanks for the links Mark, that diagram was very helpful. I did have it put together right, but after adjusting the cable, the blades still turn when engaged or disengaged. So I took it apart again and reinstalled it again and same thing. I'm not sure if the bolt has to be torqued to a certain ft. lbs. or not, so I tightened it up after using an impact and it helped some. The blades still turn, but very slow now. But you can feel the tension when trying to start it up. It pulls much easier to start with the blade handle forward & engaged. Any thoughts about this? Thanks again.

Bolt needs to be torqued with torque wrench, ft. lbs. should be in your manual. Check cable for adjustment in manual also.

Here's the exploded view; be sure all parts are installed in the correct orientation.

More than anything else DON'T use the mower until the repairs are complete and the blade(s) fully stop when the blade control lever is released. Otherwise, spinning blades pose a significant safety hazard. If you're not able to complete the repairs, get a Honda Dealer to take a look. Here's where to find one close to you. FYI, most are not too busy right now, so if you do need to get it to a dealer, do it soon and avoid the spring crush of service work...

Thanks for the response Robert and Mark, its much appreciated. I inherited this mower approx. 8 yrs ago from a neighbor who had to move back into his in laws house and his storage unit was full and he asked me if I could store it for him and I could use it anytime, and he'd pick it up when he could, which never happened. I'd say out of the 8yrs I've had it, it sat unused for the last 5-6 yrs due to me having 2 back surgeries. Now I'm feeling better, I'm looking forward to doing my own yard work again, its kind of theraputic for me. So earlier this week I tried to start it, with no luck. So I changed the plug, air filter, and broke down the carb and cleaned it all up, then she fired right up on the 3rd it 4th pull and it runs like a champ again. Also, I've never had the manual for it. So now today, I tried to torque the center bolt to 40 ft. lbs. as I seen in a diagram provided on this site, now more bad news, apparently I must have stripped out the threads when cranking the bolt with my impact, because now it won't even tighten up. I'm going to try to use a couple washers for now (a temp fix) and hopefully it will tighten up on good threads not so deep into the shaft. Also, it starts so much easier with the blade handle pushed forward (engaged) and blades turning, than it does disengaged. When disengaged, it feels like its under a load when pulling the starter rope. Never had any problem with anything with this mower until the accidental removal of the blade clutch assembly. Sorry for being long winded, and all feedback is very much appreciated. Have a great weekend you all.

You can download a free digital copy of the owner's manual here: Honda HRB Series Owner's Manuals

If that center hole is stripped, please DO NOT use the mower until it is properly repaired/replaced. Same goes for the stuck blade problem. There is a significant safety risk of operating the mower with such issues, as the blades could fly off, causing injury to the operator, other people, pets and property damage. Adding a couple of washers just to get some usable thread reduces the structural integrity of the mower's design. I'd strongly urge you to have a Honda dealer fully inspect and evaluate the mower.
