Don't pick up more than you can handle.

Try not to do too many extras for Free, because they often come to expect it.

The first thing I'd do is get my license. Start small with some type of riding mower, Trimmer, Edger and Blower and work my way up from there, add better equipment through time or as you build your business and reputation and can pay for it, don't finance your equipment, if you do you'll not see any real profit for a number of years. Remember word of mouth is your best advertisement, do a good job, keep you clients list and routes close so you can cut your gas expenses and spend more time cutting and be sure not to under bid jobs.

Thought of another:

Be prepared to wear many hats, doing the work itself is only 1/2 of it.

Remember the old saying "You can't get blood from a turnip" after many years as a licensed general contractor I find that the best thing I have done is find good customers who can afford to pay me enough to do a very good job for them. I have to deal with less people and spend more time on each jobsite which equates to less travel time and cost.
