Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice on keeping my lawn lush and healthy throughout the year. I’ve noticed some brown patches and uneven growth lately, and I’m not sure if it’s due to watering, mowing, or soil issues.

I typically water a few times a week, mow regularly, and occasionally fertilize, but I feel like I might be missing something. Are there specific techniques or schedules you recommend for different seasons?

Also, how do you deal with weeds without harming the grass?

Any tips on aeration, fertilization, or pest control would be greatly appreciated!

If you want to really juice your lawn up, hire a company like Trugreen to come and apply liquid fertilizer. The lawn has to be small enough. typically less than an acre, for this to be affordable. It isn’t cheap period though. Mow your grass in four different directions each week, keep your blades sharp , mow around 4”( if it is fescue for example), and water early in the morning about 1” each week, if no rain.

What is the grass type?

Cool and warm season turfs have a different recipe for maintenance.

start by
1) figuring out what grasses you have. Example, is it a collection of weeds, grasses and plants that act like a lawn, or is it commercial sod that was laid six months ago.
2) do a soil test in two or three areas to see what is going on. It takes years to build soil.
3) be prepared to spend hours learning about minerals and soil. There is no such thing as a single application of "healthy-green-grass-additive."

I use one of these type tools in the photo below, and Waypoint Labs in Memphis TN for my soil tests. Many places sell a soil coring tool
