BELT for troy bilt pony 42 inch cut

I think my current belt is way to loose. It's not in bad shape but whenever I disengage the blades and lift the lever up the belt comes off the pulley. Then when I engage it dont come on and I get down and look the belt is off. I need a new belt that has not been stretched I think. My spring is little loose but long as the belt is on the pulley it works fine, but when blades not turned on belt has alot slack in it.

I think this may come from belts being folded over and stored in the cardboard sheath. After installing a new belt this spring I had the same problem with the belt hopping off when disengaging I found that slowly disengaging seemed to take care of the problem. I had considered making a guide to keep the belt on but after a few mowing's the new belt seems to have worn in and the problem went away.

Yes sir. I understand that, when disengaging the blade does your belt look super loose I can just reach under there and pull the belt off if I want

Sounds like one or more of the belt retainers is missing. Spindle pulley covers are belt retainers. Also the engine's PTO pulley must its belt retainer in place.

Now the 1/2 x 96.5 belt is pretty loose to start with. Might think about trying a 1/2 x 96 belt.

I have all the guards around the pulleys on the outside and the two in the middle of the deck has those brackets two because when it jumps off its always the one that has the little bar in the whole the pulley that is attached to the arm.

Where can I find a 96 instead a 96.5

I don't like the alignment of the two idler pulleys. They are not level with the spindle pulleys. I have seen that one might be tilted, but it appears, from the pictures, that both are. Try bending them level and make sure they spin freely and quietly. Also, make sure the engage idler mounting plate moves freely.

Yes the pulley that has the bracket that moves when the blade is engaged is loose and lays down on deck I can lift up on it but when let go it just leans back down not sure if the bracket where the rod goes in needs to be bent to lift it up some? When I engage push lever handle down for engagement that pulley lifts up,disengage pulley leans down

I did put on a little shorter belt and from just engaging it and leaving it in a few min then repeatly engaging and disengaging it feels alot tighter no speaking or smoking a little burn smell first few min with a new belt. Then when I disengage the pulleys stop then but the looser belt that would jump off I could hear pulleys turning like 10 seconds after disengaging. Not now though seems tighter. I haven't cut with it yet.

When I ordered a new belt with the belt part number listed under the hood, it was way too long so I brought the old belt to my local "Belt Store". They matched it and I've had zero problems since.

What was the number under hod you ordered?

Might sound crazy but you need to replace the spindle brake shoes. Look at the brake shoes or pads that push against the right side spindle pulley and you will see deep groves in it. What happens is the deck belt gets pinched turning in oppiset dirrections and the belt will always come off. The brake pads keep the belt from touching at the flat idler pulley and the spindle pulley. If all belt guide are at the flat idlers are in the correct positions so belt can't come off this will fix your problem.

Also you can slowly pull pto handle back almost all the way but not complety and belt should not come off as a test the worn out brake pads, lets us know the outcome.

Good info Mike

Thanks for a reply Freddie21. You are correct with angles of idlers. They have about a 1/4" lip that keeps belt on if brackets do bend some, normal after some time. Just like helping mower people. 32 years at outdoor power shop I've come across things most techs over look. I have comebacks like most shops but this is how I figure things out. Have a lot of customers come from other shops that have good techs but just don't see things and they get like time to throw the white flag in. I teach the young guys at the shop secrets most people will never know. But I won't tell them everything until they get stuck. Just ask and I'm at work to help. Retiring soon!

Marionr26- Bring up this drawing and items 3 and 4 are the brake pads that get applied when the PTO is disengaged. They will wear completely through and not put tension on the spindle pulley. https://www.weingartz.com/assembly-...04-2011-mower-deck-42-inch/4374-268888-459565

Mike, best of retirement. It's what you make it. Stay busy.

Does that help with the pulley leaning down when not engaged it just lays on the deck until its engaged then it raises up a little. I think its going to be alot better since I have a little tighter belt now. So do order those parts its brake pads for pulley for a 42 inch troy bilt ?

Hello Star Tech. I replied yesterday, but it did not go through. The number under the hood for the deck belt is 954-04219.

That belt is usually used on a 46" deck and the belt is 103.25 but the 46" deck usually require a 102" belt here for some reason. These 46" MTD decks just won't engage right with the factory belt but the 102 works fine.

103.25 - 96.5= 6.75 so either you have a 42" or 46" deck. double check which it is.

Yes, that is the problem with the factory belt. I have a LTX1046. 46" deck. Thanks

The problem is two fold; the assemblies are expensive and they don't always line up with the spindle pulleys.

Now the pads themselves are replaceable if you can find them in after market under PN 761-04017. Rivets are 3/16 x 3/4" Steel x .200 hole size . The pads can be found on Amazon @ 2 for $8 in after market. now you need a very good pop rivet gun to install them; no el cheapo will work.

I also put a little epoxy on them.

Believe me those 97550A730 stainless steel rivets with 3/8" heads are plenty tight and no epoxy is needed. With rivets only then the pads can be replaced again later. They not those cheap soft aluminum rivets.
