My old battery post melted, I bought a new one, I checked voltage that shows 12.07 on the new battery which the instructions said it should be.. battery post is very clean, no corrosion. The negative cable gets so hot it has started melting the cable into the battery. I took the cables loose before the post started melting. Any ideas what i should do

you have a major short!.....check all your big wiring for worn spots and burn marks.....this is dangerous
I would start by checking the insulation on the red battery wire. I may have a spot that has worn off and is contacting bare metal. You have a dead short to a high amp draw wire like a positive battery cable.

The first thing I would check is internal corrosion in both the positive and negative cables. Corrosion will cause resistance to current flow and cause a lot of heat. If it came into my shop I would be replacing both cables, negative for sure.
