My youngest son has a 2009 Simplicity Conquest that he purchased used last Sept. with 175 hrs. on 20 h.p. Vanguard engine. Owner purchased new in 2009 & kept tractor in garage. My son called me Sat. evening after mowing & fertilizing yard saying tractor shut down while fertilizing yard, got it back to his basement shop & used his 1977 Simplicity 14 h.p. Baron to finish fertilizing. The Baron is a tank like they use to make tractors. Drove down to sons house yesterday after Church & lunch & put our heads together. Battery was almost new when he purchased tractor so I told him to use jumper pack to get it started & I would remove positive red cable from battery while running & see if engine would shut down & tell us alternator was not keeping battery charged up, engine shut down in 10 seconds. My son also used multimeter while engine running to test alternator leads for charging voltage which was zero. Both leads from alternator were pinched, no bare wire showing, where individual from factory had run harness behind starter & against heatshield, thus pinching leads. He removed blower housing & flywheel & used Shop Vac to clean engine, parts, etc. He ordered new B&S alternator, told me to be careful when ordering OEM parts from so many choices that advertise as being OEM parts.
