Hi, I have a B&S 282H07-0110-E1 engine with what appears to be a leak on the OHV cover. Is it ok to use Permatex or similar to fix this issue as the gasket set is not cheap.

Gaskets are normally really reasonably priced. I use Permatex The Right Stuff which is ready in 90 minutes. Have had excellent results. Make sure both the valve cover and cylinder head are completely clean of all gasket material, sealant, oil.

or just the valve cover gasket

Gee! You just need a valve cover gasket, that is a whole cylinder head set.

Remove the cover, clean it well, then clean the head surface well where the cover goes. Apply some Permatex Ultra Gray or Ultra Black, let it sit for about a minute, then assemble and snug the bolts down lightly. Don't use cheap bathtub clear silicone because it will fail with heat in a short time.

Most Briggs and Stratton engines use silicone instead of replacement valve cover gaskets when servicing.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies. Yes as pointed out I don't need the whole gasket set. Will get too it.

Make yourself a water manometer and check crank case pressure .

Let's seal the valve cover first before the second stage booster is installed. :D

By all means, if a real gasket is offered, use it. Stay clear of RTV if at all possible. Think of the next guy that has to pull that cover off, and CLEAN it all up.
