B&S no power

Hi All, I have a B&S 10T802 0547 B2 engine, on a push mower, it has no power, fresh gas, new plug, clean air filter, under deck clean, seems like the governor is not working correctly, it has been adjusted per specs , no springs involved just a straight rod from carb to governor shaft.
almost seems that governor is working in reverse, will accelerate manually if I move the throttle.

There still should be a governor spring from end of governor linkage at the throttle vane on the carburetor to the control braket.

Thanks, I will order one.

Hi, received the spring, adjusted the governor shaft per specs, with spring installed it starts but way over rev’s.
any thoughts.

Governor shaft could be set backwards.
Throttle spring too tight keeping throttle pinned WFO.
Put your finger on the throttle linkage. Hold it partially closed. Pull the rope. Manipulate the throttle with your finger.

Hi, mower starts fine, can’t find a video on how to adjust the governor for this particular engine, so I did the following.
1. closed throttle and and watched the direction that the governor shaft turned, CCW .
2. loosened clamp screw and made sure governor shaft was all of the way CCW , which it was.
3. Attached new governor spring which held the throttle wide open, bracket adjustment made no difference, seemed spring was to short, stretched spring to relieve some of the tension, worked a bit better but it is still not right.

Any idea how many RPMs "way over revving" is? I used to tune mine down to burn less gas (and oil!) but I read in this forum that splash-oiled engines should idle at 3600 for good lubrication.

Keep all air cooled splash lubed engines at 3200-3600rpms ALL the time. Check your engine and mower manuals for rated max rpms.

Sounds like the spring is too short. Is this the proper Briggs spring? If it is, you shouldn't have to tweak it unless you hooked it to the wrong spot making it too short.

Hi, from what I can tell it is the correct spring, it’s hard to find a part # but looking at different parts sites it’s the only number listed.

Did U watch the video every thing goes toward wide open. loosen governor arm clamp set throttle wide open turn the governor shaft in the same direction and lock the clamp bolt. If you set it the wrong way it can blow the governor gear and U have to replace it. If it is working properly U can try to move the governor arm wide open and it should push back on you. A governor works like this the spring tries to blow it up and the governor tries to save it. The balance between the 2 when properly set is top no load speed.

Reference no 209 on the break down part no 698719. The reference no for the governor spring on all Briggs engines is 209

That’s the spring I have and it’s to short, didn’t see a video of this particular engine, the instructions that I used was to pull the governor rod in the direction that closed the throttle and watch the direction the governor shaft moves ,CCW, loosen clamp and turn shaft CCW and tighten clamp , that all seemed correct when I started.

That’s the one ordered and it’s to short , no real useful adjustment.

Engine OFF, governor holds throttle WIDE OPEN. Engine ON, gov attempts to CLOSE THE THROTTLE.

That spring tries to OPEN the throttle at all times. Spring tension dependent, determines how far throttle valve is opened.

Still betting you've connected the spring AT the wrong spot, shortening the spring, over reving the engine.

You shouldn't have to mess with the governor arm unless someone has been playing around with it.

Take a picture of the spring in question from several angles. Post it up here.

Or make a video even better. Post it on youtube and link it here.

What was the issue?

Glad to hear she's a runner.

The spring! I rechecked the governor shaft, linkage, spring, and it runs fine now , for an old mower.
