Hey people. I have an mtd mower I'm trying to fix. It worked when I got it but it seemed like the motor was racing. It shook the flywheel cover screws loose and severed the spark plug cable in multiple places. I ordered a new coil that was listed to replace multiple coil part numbers. The dead one only has the plug wire and a male tab to fit the female kill wire connector. The new part has the plug cable, one black wire stripped at the end and a bare wire with a ring terminal at the end. It doesn't have any orientation markings on it to show which side goes up or down. I've tried connecting it different ways and I don't think its working. I'm thinking I should only need one of these two wires since it was set up before to just use the one it had. Any ideas?

Please post the model numbers for your engine. The coil you ordered is one for an engine which has a set of ignition points and condenser. If your engine was built after 1980 your may need a coil with magnetron built in. Please post all three sets of numbers and I will post which coil you need. Also, please post the part number of the coil you ordered.

That's what I don't understand. I don't see a tab to accept the female kill wire connected on the mower. My options are one of those two wires pictured. The wire with the ring terminal on the end is a bare wire. The other is sleeved but stripped at the end with no termination. I'll look again for a tab tomorrow but I'm pretty sure I would have noticed it if it was there.

Thank you rivets. I'm still confused about what wire is what on the new coil. My old coil and set up are exactly what you see in that video you linked. When he pulls old coil out that is what I'm looking at but with the new part I don't have the tab to just slide that connector onto. I have the two wired coming off the coil. I don't know which wire is which. I tried putting the bare wire with the ring terminal onto the mounting bolt of the coil and running the black wire of the coil to the female connector of the mower and it wouldn't work. I tried wrapping the bare wire in tape and just using the black wire off the coil to female connector and also nothing. I tried flipping the coil over since it doesn't say which is up or down like the old one did. I may try to post some pics tomorrow of what I'm looking at. Maybe I'm not understanding what you are telling me? Thanks for your patience.

Don't understand why you have two wires. Did you get an instruction card in the box? I think that you will only use one wire, the one with the stripped end. Pictures would be very helpful. I'll watch for your post tomorrow evening when I get home from work.

no instruction card. That's what has me stumped. The photo in the link I posted is exactly what I have.

Perhaps the 2 wires go to: "ring terminal to the throttle control assy, and the bare wire goes to the slip connector for the BBC?" One for throttle kill, and the other for bail kill. Either way, they "both" are more than likely kill wires.
