i see from the manual that there are three starters that could go on this engine, 3", 3 5/8", and 4 3/8". If I need to replace the starter, can I just get the longest one? Will it help with starting by going with the larger model?
I don't know which one I have yet (haven't checked). I see that replacements go for $50 or so. Is there a chance that my existing one can be "rebuilt" to like new condition? I can't seem to find any parts for that, only whole starters.
Briggs parts shows only the 3 5/8 and the 4 3/8 starters. I don't think I have ever sold one of the 4 3/8 starters in 15 years. Briggs shows the short starter at about $90 and the long starter at $120. The longer starter would probably work if it the block doesn't interfere with mounting.
How does Briggs measure that distance? I've got 4" from the bottom to the top of the can, which is all I can measure without pulling the geared portion.

That is the same engine i have and i replaced my starter about 3-4 months ago and it works better than the original. The part NO i got is 497596. You may have had trouble finding it because they replaced the old part with this one and they assigned it a new part NO. You can find them from Briggs and Stratton's website, local dealers, and other websites.
