B&S 27 HP 440000 series motor surges and will not idle

B&S 27 HP 440000 series motor. surges and will not idle checked and adjusted valves fuel filter is new check vac lines no cracks replaced plug one was cracked Due I really need to dissect and clean the carb?? any other non surgical ideas? Anyone? Thanking in advance

The most frequent cause of surging in small engines is dirty carbs. Most specifically is a clogged or partially clogged idle circuit in the carb. A small engine even running a full throttle without a load operates on the idle circuit of the carb, and doesn't use the high speed circuit until you kick the deck in.

Sure, you can try telling it to Run Forrest Run a few times. If that doesn't work then clean carb.

Bamm I need to go win the lottery to pay for gaskets. Heads up Expect to pay $80.00 for a carb rebuild kit. after looking through the illustrated parts breakdown I called the "authorized B&S dealer/ listed the gaskets I might need one by one. I like to know how much before I start. some important gaskets can not be ordered individually, the part # supersedes to the carb rebuild kit.

With that in mind I gingerly took the carb apart performing the delicate removal surgery on the gaskets. Now I know some will call me cheap. In the past I had no problem replacing gaskets every time but I never spent more than $20.00. I was able to reuse all but the nasty green bowl gasket. and

Yes the carb needed cleaning (gum deposits in the bowl.)

The machine runs much better but not 100% surging only happens at very low rpm and according to the manual governor is set for 1750 RPM. I may be pushing the mower idle to low. SO I JUST TURNED IN THE IDLE SET SCREW ALL THE WAY IN AND LEFT IT.

Unless its a governor issue I give up. I'll take the 80%

I suggest that you do a compression test and if the readings between cylinders vary excessively, then do a leakdown test to determine where the compression is leaking.
As for a carb cleaning, if you are careful while disassembling the carb, you will be able to reuse the gaskets. Don't allow carb cleaner to contact the gaskets as it will destroy them.
My 44P777 had stuck rings on the starter motor side cylinder at which time I chose to replace the engine. Needing better air filtration was the 2nd reason that I repowered.
If you think that Briggs parts are expensive, stay away from Kawasaki!!!
