mower was running and then stopped all of a sudden with a metal type sound. the blades were not engaged and it was sitting when this happened. i can turn the flywheel about 2 rounds counter clockwise and when i go back the other way after those turns it just stops. i can hear something hitting metal. doesnt sound like something is broke but like it hits a wall. I have tried to turn it with a breaker bar and it will not move past that one point. I have no idea what it could be at this point, any ideas?

Something let loose in the engine sounds like. Check your oil?
Take the spark plug out then try spinning it, if spins like normal more than likely a valve issue. While the plug is out see if you can determine if the piston still goes up and down in the cylinder.

The oil was good but have not taken the spark plug out yet. The hard stop it is doing doesnt seem like the plug would fix anything. like a pipe hitting a metal pole kinda thing

Outside possibility, magnet came loose in flywheel. More likely, threw a rod. Remove spark plug as said, stick screwdriver or dowel in plug hole and see if piston is moving when you turn flywheel. No, rod, yes maybe flywheel magnet.
