Have a problem with this 3 year old lawn tractor - when I turn the key, all I get is a 'click, click, click'. Figured it was the battery so I picked up a new one and installed it. No luck - same result. Dealer wants $60 just to pick it up and deliver it back, plus $75 per hour plus cost of parts. Could this be a bad selenoid? If it were a car, that's what I would check next. Any ideas?
Take a jump wire and go from the battery + terminal to the small terminal on the solenoid. If it just clicks, the solenoid is bad. If the engine turns over, you have to look for a reason for a high voltage draw in the starting circuit.

Some solenoids have two small terminals on them and one is a ground so make sure you are not creating a short circuit. If your solenoid has four wires, use a test light with the clip on the POSITIVE side of the battery and touch the small black wire to find out if it is the ground wire. Just being on the safe side.
