Ariens 1028 riding mower wont charge the battery from running

I have an old ariens 1028 riding mower. It was given to me by my father in law. Works great but you have to jump start it. I just changed the oil, spark plug, and battery. The new battery started it right up. I ran it for about 30 mins. Drove up and down the drive. Waited a day now it won't start without a jump. As always. How do I fix it? At least trouble shoot it. I know NOTHING about these or any other engines.
Thanks for reading and any advice.

As usual We need the model numbers of both the equipment and engine. Ariens uses a six model number for parts look-up. These numbers for the Ariens in on the serial number tag. IF you have Briggs the model, type, datecode is needed. which are on the engine.

Will some please make a sticky about this needed info as it is needed for all equipment help requests.

there is a sticky, but it's in the new members section.... it would probably do better as a sticky at the top of each brand forum.

I think the main problem is posters just don't read the requirements for posting or at least it seems to be the problem. They need to understand just auto parts we have thousands of models and variations. On top there many different engines used. Personally my crystal ball has been recalled because it was getting fake news.

Mine's in the shop for warranty work.... hopefully they can get the right parts for it, as i didn't give them the model number of it.
(No, OP this is not directed at you, just a general statement )

When you jump the mower, and it's running, i would check the battery voltage. i would expect to see 13v or higher.

Maybe it would be possible for the administration to post an auto conversation to all new members on what they should include when posting. This way it will be right in front of them after they sign up.

Follow the wires leading around the base of the engine if it is like the Cub Cadet zero turns. A light blue wire may be broken or shorted. Charge the Battery fully, off the machine and take it to a shop for Battery Load Test

I am sorry. After reading your reply I realize my folly. I did NOT read the posting rules and of course you couldn't know this info.
Anyway here are the numbers
Ariens riding 1028
Model 927046

Briggs and stratton
Model 28b707
Type 1142-e1
Code 0202197d

So with that please let me know if y'all have any insight. Thank you.

I would check that the voltage regulator is grounded to the engine. According this engine uses the tri-circuit stator with a two wire voltage regulator [one in and one out] or the dual circuit stator.. Many time Briggs will mount them on the plastic parts and run a ground wire from the mounting screw to the engine. Also it output voltage with engine at 3600 rpm it should be above the standing battery voltage [voltage measured with the engine not running] but less than 16vdc. If the standing battery voltage and regulator output voltage are the same then the regulator mostly bad; although, a stator is possible [just not as likely]. To check this check the input lead of the voltage regulator [stator output lead] and it should be near 40 vac.

The dual circuit stator can be used on this engine and it does not use a regulator but instead as diode in one of the leads. These tend to burn out [opens up] and when they there will be no output voltage other than the standing battery. When working the output can be from slightly above the battery standing voltage to 16 vdc but around 13-14 vdc. On this stator Briggs does give any measurement other an amp of up to 3 amps on the DC lead for the battery and Ac voltage of 14 vac on the lead for the lights.

Wish be exact on which stator setup Briggs but they generalize the IPL.

Just note the Ariens wiring diagram would suggest the tri-circuit was used originally.

Here is the wiring diagram for the Ariens.

This manual may help you identify and test your charging system. I would test everything before buying any parts. https://www.briggsandstratton.com/c...a/en_us/Files/FAQs/alternator_replacement.pdf
