The 40 inch deck diagraph should give you and idea where one end goes...such as an arm that swings out.(one that holds an idler pulley)
If you find one end's location then the length of the spring narrows down the choices for the other end.
bertsmobile1 tells people to get in bright light and look for a shiny wear spot where the spring hooks.

The 40 inch is no help. I bought Service Manual from Ariens. Not a good photo of 28 inch Deck . I disconnected Mower Deck to get at PTO Clutch today.
Went ok until I got to Bolt on Clutch. Won't budge.

How about the actual model number. When I do a search for Ariens 1028 it shows me a snow blower.

In your manual page, 6-22 is a picture of the idler pulley and spring connected.

Photo on pg.22 is a 40 inch Deck- Model 927065. Page 21 shows where Pto belt attaches to Motor, but does not show other end where Idler is attached.
THANKS.

Do you know where one end attaches?
If so, that limits the possibilities for the other end...a hole showing some wear spots.

I know it's for the 40 inch deck but it's also the same mounting position for the 30 inch deck. The Idler goes into the same hole that the 40 in deck that goes into. Spring also attaches the same. The only difference between the two is that one has a bend in it and the other one does not

By the way that attaches to the underside of the mower not to the mower deck.

Sorry for late reply, yes I did find a photo of 28 inch deck in owners manual. I'm on here today for a Ariens snow B. problem.
I replaced the Blade Clutch on my 1028 mower. Big and expensive project, but it's working. Thanks for helping me out.
Sorry for late reply.
