I have 2 Briggs & Stratton 12.5 HP engines, model 286707-0437-01 (built -1992) & model 289707-0179-01 (built -1996).
Other than the years of manufacture are there any real differences in these engines? I'm thinking of swapping the newer engine for the older engine because the newer engine runs better but the older mower is in overall better shape. They are both on Craftsman MODEL NO. 917.255572 (1992) & 917.256451 (1996). They look to be the same mower just different years like the engines. I'm thinking it should be a straight forward swap. Any thoughts?
ILEGINE ,Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately neither of these engines have any of those features. Both are electric start with a gravity fed fuel system.

the 286707 diagram shows a fuel pump and both show a recoil start being used in conjunction with electric starters. Normally when the diagram shows an item but is not used we get an error message about item not found if we click on it.
Different models may have different blade mounting shaft diameters or shaft lengths which may not be apparent at first glance. Some advanced detailed measurements would be in order.

do you have the "model number" off of the hood? like LT2000, or DYT4000 etc. ?
