AN OLDIE BUT A GOODY!!

THIS IS WHAT I BELIEVE TO HAVE BEEN A LATE 50'S EARLY 60'S SNAPPER COMET 306R. IT IS NOW A BIT OF A "HYBRID". THE ORIGINAL DRIVETRAIN WAS DRIVEN BY TWO LARGE CAST IRON BRAKE DRUMS, NLA, IMAGINE THAT HUH. I WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR THE REAR END BUT I LIKED THE WIDE DESIGN OF THE REAR FRAME SO I "FRANKENSTEINED" A SERIES 4 REAR DRIVE UNDERNEATH IT AND IT WORKS PERFECTLY (AS DO MOST OLD SNAPPERS). I WENT WITH A MID 70s 8 HORSE B&S AND DECALED IT AS AN EARLY 60s. ALL IN ALL I THINK IT TURNED OUT PRETTY GOOD. I COMPLETELY SAND BLASTED, PRIMED AND PAINTED THIS ONE WITH MAJIC BRAND IMPLEMENT PAINT FROM TSC, THAT STUFF WORKS PRETTY GOOD. NOW THE BIG QUESTION IS, DO I SELL IT OR KEEP IT???:confused3:

Hi snapperrestol

I like it that is kool and you did a very good job at it. You should keep it with all the work and time and expense you have in to this mower. Snappers are good machines i have a snow blower from 1984 model and it still works very good . Thanks for posting all the great pictures you have.:licking::licking::licking::licking::licking:

That's a neat mower and you did a great job restoring it! R series are kinda rare nowdays. My started selling Snapper about 1966 and the R series was fixing to be replaced by the X series. Parts for the R's were hard to find in the mid 1970's. They actually made a walk behind version of the R series and they were called Country Cruiser's. I'd definately keep it! Thanks!!!

Originally the rear axle was driven with some cast iron "brake drums" is I guess the best way to describe it. I contacted the techs at Snapper.com and they indicated that the parts for that drive type hadn't been manufactured in decades. I liked the way it looked with the wider rear end so I grafted a transaxle from a 33114XS under it. It was kinda difficult but the outcome was better than I expected. I love it, I just can't bring myself to mow grass with it. HAHA.

Great set of photos and a great job on the mower, if you cut grass now it will not look like that for long, if you sale her, you will only miss her..:frown:

i just recently aquired a snapper RER model 308x. when i pulled up the manual for it, it stated it was a comet model 308x. was just wondering how many versoins of the comet did they make? just asking

What an awesome job!

Hey Snapperresto, what kind of paint did you use? I have a 3 series and want to restore it. Man I hope that my work will come out at best half as good as yours.
