just bought a new battery and it read 12.71 and when started it read 12.8.ivenever had aproblem with a dying battery before I just jumped it this once and rode the mower for two hours and it never charged.i have a 2008 17.5 briggs motor and im wondering if the alternator is under the fly wheel
a new 12 V battery that reads 12.anything isn't dead there is a problem other than the battery if it doesnt go below around 10V when attempting to crank if it goes to about 8V when cranking have the battery load tested
Surface charges occur due to sulfating of neglected and old batteries . A DVM probe on the terminals can read 12v in a battery which will not take a charge. A load test or even a battery hydrometer reading is a better test. Unfortunately, many "battery shop tests" are highly suspect, it seems.

Try pullin the starter off and test it by "hot wiring" direct to the battery and ground ...... could have a melted starter . Boobala :confused2:
