put it in a tub of lukewarm water with some dish soap and just kind of clean it and sqeeze the dirt out by hand

then rinse under clean water and let the filter air dry by itself

once dry, pour a bit of motor oil over the filter and squeeze it by hand to kind of make sure the entire filter is covered in oil, the filter should be "oily" to the touch but SHOULD NOT be dripping oil!

mikey11 gave you valid advice for certain types of "foam" air filters but some you don't oil such as foam pre-filters.

How about you start by telling us what brand engine you have, model, type and code numbers, what equipment the engine powers, etc. and then we will be able to give you the most appropriate advice.

Did you happen to read the owner's manual on servicing the air filter? What does it tell you?

Yes just wash foam pre-filter with soap and water. Rinse til clean.
But I do not oil the pre filter with anything.
I just clean it often, about every 4 mows.

If your filter is a stand alone filter, they need to be oiled. If your filter is a wrap around pre-filter no oil should be added. If you oil pre-filters over paper filters the oil will transfer to the paper element causing premature failure due to clogging.

thanks everyone,

it is a stand-alone filter, husqvarna manual says to use a special oil and not engine oil, but I have used engine oil for a filter in the past many years ago. Does it really matter and if so, where would you by this special oil?
