Aerating the lawn?

I've learned new things recently, here in fact, like not to roll your lawn without aerating. I'm thinking my lawn needs a good rolling, so I'm wondering how one goes about aerating a lawn. Do you do it before or after aerating? What other reasons would one aerate the lawn? Am I spelling that right?
