Hello All
I have worked on Lawn-Boy Mower's for the past 30 Year's and really like to get them up & Running again. Once I am sure that they run good I flip them for a Profit. In this time period I have had some that were easy to get back to good running consition, Then I have had some that were very tempermental in Nature. I am Normally Not a Lover of the D-series engine's as they were problematic with their CDI coil pack's as well as their annoying Modular carburetor's. A Month or so ago I met up with a buddy of mine that own's a Lawn mower Grave yard. He does not like to work on Lawn-Boy engine's but when he see's them for sale at a Good price he always' pick's them up and set's them aside for me. This summer has been a real dry spell for him in Locating any Lawn-Boy Mower's but he had a Model 5244 set aside for me when I visited him. It is a 19" Push mower with the D-series engine. he said that he needed $20.00 for it, so I Paid him and brought it home. I normally Take the carburetor's off all the Lawn-Boy Mower's that come through my shop so I did this one too. It had some slight Trash in it's fuel bowl, but looked to be clean inside other wise. It's flywheel magnet and coil face were rusty so I cleaned it up with some sandpaper and re-set it's air gap. I flushed it's fuel Tank and Placed it back on the engine. I Hit it's primer bulb Twice and Yanked it's starter cord and it came to life. Once it was warmed up I adjusted it's air Needle screw and it Purred like a Kitten. I was very glad that it's Modular Carburetor did not give me fit's as I have not had a Good past history with these Problematic Modular Carburetor's. Here is how it look's cleaned up and running Good now. Regards, Hammerdown

That's a really nice looking mower, Hammerdown. The 19" models are less common so they tend to be worth more. You got a great deal on that one.

I have 3 19-inchers. I have always liked that size. I mow with them, including one just a bit newer than the one in your photos...very early F engine on mine.

Hello
The engine shroud like that on my 5244 were known as the suitcase style. They are the later style D-series engine shroud's. Prior to this the early D-engines had a square style shroud and were called the Brick Top's. I located a nice old 19" Brick top for my son in law earlier this past spring. It needed a condenser a common issue with the Lawn-Boy Point's style ignition system's. Once i Placed the new condenser it started right up and has run perfectly all summer for him. This winter we need to Place a new Primer Plunger inside his Carburetor, they commonly break down with age and the rubber pieces let loose, The Bad part is that the carburetor as well as the Reed Plate assembly has to come off the engine to work on The Carburetor as Lawn-Boy bolted the metal carburetor's on from the rear of the Reed Plate. I am Not a Lover of these D-style engine's due to their Problematic Modular carburetor's as well as the Early style CDI Coil Packs. Both component's are Well Known to fail. I like the later F-series engine and feel that the F-series engine's were the very best one's made by Lawn-Boy. I have a Commercial Model 22241 that had the F-series engine on it and Three speed Transmission that we use weekly. I swapped Two MTD Push Mower's for it that I picked up Free. They were both 21" Push mower's with Briggs & Stratton 3-1/2 H.P. Engines on them. When I brought the Commercial Model 22241 mower home shown below, it needed a coil pack of which I had on hand and it had a split rear drive tire on it, so I Picked one up off a Dura-force mower in a lawn mower Bone yard for $5.00 and it was off and running. We have used it weekly all summer with no issues. This winter, I Plan on Pulling the engine off of the deck so that I can re-paint the deck and Control's handle. I will Place new Crankcase seals top and bottom in the engine while I have it off. It should look like new next spring when I break it out for it's Nine month Mowing season. This machine is kind of Rare as they only made it one year being 1996. Currently I have $5.00 in it. Regards, Hammerdown

I like that F-series commercial. I'm always on the lookout for one of those.

But what is it about that one (the 1996 model) that's so different from other F-series commercials?

Hello Two Stroke
Thank You, I appreciate your kind words. I am Not sure why they only offered this commercial 22241 mower one year only. perhaps' it was too expensive as it has the cast aluminum deck & Three speed Transmission. They started coming out with the Dura-Surge model's that had more horsepower maybe that had something to do with it's short life span. It was also during that time frame when Toro was about to merge with Lawn-Boy and maybe sale's were soft on this commercial model. I can't see any phisicqal difference in this F-series engine it has a Manual primer bulb on it yet has a Throttle adjustment. I Love it and it is at my home to stay. Regards, Hammerdown

Well, I've got Lawnboys of just about all vintages, but for some reason, I really like the Bricktop and other D-engine mowers. I have several, and mow with them, and I have not found the carbs used on the various D-engine mowers to be a problem. I suppose perhaps this is because I grew up with them. The first gas-powered mower my dad bought was a Bronze colored Bricktop lawnboy from the late 1950's, and subsequently I had a cream colored D-engine mower during the 1970's, and I just plain like them. (They're long gone, so I can't tell you model numbers) I certainly have no problem maintaining the mechanical governor and the points and condenser type of ignition.
