I am a homeowner and this machine (96 Walker Model C)has served us well. It worked fine last week. I tried to start it today and noticed an electrical burning smell. The ground cable, which was old, burned thru. I replaced the cable and tried again. The ground wire and battery heat up, so I'm guessing a short somewhere. The engine does not turn over or make any noise at all. The only Walker dealer within 100 miles closed a few years ago, and I've managed to keep this thing going on my own with help from forums like this. Where would you suggest I start looking? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. My neighbor, turns out to be "the man" for engines came over to see what I was fusing about. He tested the starter with a screwdriver and it works fine. He noticed a hole in the red cover on the battery terminal and suspects it was shorting out to the frame. Maybe 30 years of my fat arse pushed the frame down a bit. Anyway it is up and running after some flex tape here and there. and I got the grass cut before the rain. We'll see next week! Thanks again.
I do blow the engine clean every use, but didn't know about the engine shroud. That will happen before the next use. Thanks!
