'92 1440 Starting Issue

Folks,
I have a 1992 Cub Cadet lawn tractor that I use primarily for snow removal.
My only problem is that it has begun to start really hard.
Yet, once it starts it runs like new. Looks like it, too.

The battery is new.
But, when I crank it over it behaves as if the battery is dead.
It will kick once or twice, then nothing. But, it will do this over and over and over.
And, if I persist (especially if I shoot it with some ether) it eventually fires, cranks normally and starts.
Then, like I said...it runs fine. And, if I shut it down and then restart it, it turns over normally; starts right up.

Given its age I suspect the starter.
Any thoughts?
And, how hard would it be to replace the starter on this unit.

I somewhere read a post that it can't be done without pulling the engine??

Thanks for any assistance.
I love this old beast.
