this engine is on a Troy belt rear tine tiller.
symtoms- had to run with choke partially on.
took carb off, had to run a left hand threaded bit to get the main jet? (Or whatever it’s called) out. Previous owner boogered the slot.
cleaned good, assembled, started up and now it runs rich, black smoke, finally will settle in and idle, engage tines and black smoke blows out and will almost die.
gas is misting out of the carb while it is trying to run
Float and needle seem to be working when I blow into the fuel inlet,
any ideas?

I'm guessing that left handed bit opened up the jet. Get a whole new carb on Ebay for about $15 if you shop some. But that gas misting out of the carb is maybe a sign on something else?

Edit: the governor is really working to keep it running and that’s when I see some gas splashing out.
maybe I just buy a new carburetor, are the ones on Amazon and eBay any good?
