89 Briggs Repar question, HELP!!!! Snapper Mower

Hey Guys, I have a Briggs and Stratton Model 110908-1005-01 4HP

I am not able to get the Sump cover off because of the notches on the Crank Shaft! I am totally baffled as to how they got the cover on. It gets caught up around the oil seal.

Here is a picture of the notches to better explain, if anyone has any knowledge on how to remove the cover and get past the notches, that would be great!

Those "notches" are woodruff keys. They are shaped like a half moon and easy to remove. You will need a punch, hammer and pliers. With the hammer and punch tap down on one end and it will rock up the other end. Then pull it out with the pliers. Look at the attach pic. After you have both keys removed. Clean the shaft with emery cloth very well before trying to remove the sump cover.

My dad purchased this Snapper Mower in 1978 and he asked me to fix it. I have never worked on a lawn mower before. The strange thing about this set up is the model, type, and code suggest that it is an 89 so I guess somewhere along the line someone replaced the motor? Or could they just have changed the shroud? I have a Briggs and Stratton repair manual (Single Cylinder "L" Head Built after 1981) I hope I am not working on a 78 with an 89 shroud on it :eek:

It does have a vertical rewind starter, the teeth of the starter sit against the flywheel. The Teeth look a little worn out, I am going to replace the whole assembly.

No big thing but your statement above confuses me. You have a recoil starter "with teeth" on it? as opposed to a recoil clutch.

Briggs had some engines that had a vertical pull starter that had a gear with teeth on it that engaged the flywheel like an electric starter. Briggs also had a few engines that had the normal clutch type recoil, but had an electric starter that mounted in what was the vertical pull starter mounting holes.

You might want to get a book on small engines. Study it a bit. And take some notes on things as you take them apart. Pictures as well in this day and age. In my day we just drew a sketch with notes and made alot of marks. I still draw minor repair things out.

Yes, it's a vertical pull starter that sits in a curved metal case and is mounted right up next to the flywheel so the teeth can engage. It has a coil spring on the bottom of the unit for the rewind but mine is broken.

I purchased the Briggs and Stratton Repair Manual for motors built after 1981 (L Head)

I also took lots of pictures while I was taking the motor apart. I am guessing the linkage will be tricky.

I have ordered a lot of parts for it that will be here soon.
